I noticed one of my new clients hadn’t been paying their meal tax monthly.
I reached out to them after my initial review of their books. They sounded panicked
because they just thought their previous bookkeeper was making the payment to the
State.
"Don't worry - you'll be alright. We'll make sure you're taken care of, "I told my brand
new client on the phone.
This was a pretty scary thing for them, considering a late fee fine was building along
with the balance that was owed and was getting larger every month.
It was an easy problem to fix because we knew what we needed to do to get the State
the meal tax returns and payment.
So I dug right into their books and got to work:
First, we needed to make sure the previous bookkeeper was at the very least recording
the sales into QuickBooks so we could calculate the amounts.
Then we had to figure out how to get the outstanding balance and fines paid to the
State since there wasn't that much in their Checking account.
Calculated what the monthly meal tax was supposed to be and processed the meal tax
returns.
The restaurant owner and I developed a plan to get the outstanding balance paid and
worked with the State on the agreed monthly amounts. And not only did we manage to
avoid any more late fees, we even reduced expenses and created a system to prevent
this from happening again.
